Sea or air freight from China to the UAE: how to decide

Sea is cheaper, air is faster. The right choice depends on weight, value and how urgently the stock is needed.

Key points
  • Sea freight suits heavy, bulky and planned orders.
  • Air freight suits light, valuable or urgent goods.
  • Courier and express services suit samples and small parcels.
  • Plan orders around sea transit to avoid paying for air.

How to decide

  1. Weight and volume. Freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Bulky light goods can be expensive by air.
  2. Value. High-value, small items such as electronics or jewellery can justify air.
  3. Urgency. If stock is needed for a launch or a season, the cost of missing it may be higher than air freight.
  4. Order size. Below a full container, sea LCL (shared container) can still beat air for heavy goods.

Plan to avoid air

Most emergency air shipments are planning problems. Build sea transit, customs clearance and production holidays such as Chinese New Year into your order calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Is LCL or FCL better?

LCL suits smaller volumes sharing a container. FCL becomes better value once you fill most of a container.

What is volumetric weight?

A calculated weight based on size. Carriers charge whichever is higher, actual or volumetric.

Should samples go by sea?

Usually no. Samples go by express courier because speed matters more than cost.
