Yiwu or Guangzhou? Choosing where to source in person

Two of China's best-known trading hubs serve different buyers. Which fits your products and order size.

Key points
  • Yiwu is known for small commodities and huge wholesale markets.
  • Guangzhou is a major trade hub, home to the Canton Fair and many wholesale markets.
  • Factory clusters elsewhere often specialise in one product type.
  • Plan visits around trade fairs and avoid Chinese New Year.

Factory clusters

Many products are made in specialised clusters across Guangdong, Zhejiang and other provinces. If you need a factory rather than a trader, find the cluster for your product and visit there.

Planning a trip

  • Shortlist suppliers before travelling and book meetings.
  • Combine the trip with a trade fair such as the Canton Fair.
  • Avoid the weeks around Chinese New Year.
  • Bring your specifications, target prices and a way to take notes on every stand.
  • Arrange an interpreter or sourcing partner for negotiations.

Do I need an interpreter?
