How to find a reliable supplier in China: a guide for Gulf brands
Finding a supplier is easy. Finding one you can trust takes a process. Here it is, step by step.
- Search widely, then shortlist hard.
- Ask the same questions to every supplier so answers are comparable.
- Verify the company and see the factory before paying.
- Start with a sample and a small first order.
There is no shortage of Chinese suppliers. Sourcing platforms list thousands for almost any product. The hard part is telling a reliable manufacturer from a trading company with good photos, or from a business that will disappear after the deposit.
Step 1: Where to look
| Source | Good for |
|---|---|
| B2B platforms (Alibaba, Made-in-China, Global Sources) | Wide search, export-ready suppliers |
| 1688 | Domestic Chinese prices, usually needs an agent |
| Trade fairs (Canton Fair and others) | Meeting many suppliers in person |
| Industrial clusters | Visiting factories that specialise in one product (see Yiwu or Guangzhou?) |
| Sourcing partners | Shortlisting and checking on your behalf |
Step 2: Shortlist
Send the same request to ten to fifteen suppliers: product, specification, quantity, packaging and target price. Shortlist the ones who answer clearly, ask good questions and understand your market.
Step 3: Ask the right questions
- Are you the factory or a trading company?
- What is your minimum order quantity and lead time?
- Which markets do you export to? Have you shipped to the UAE or Saudi Arabia?
- Which certifications do you hold?
- What are your payment terms?
Step 4: Verify
Check the business licence and its Unified Social Credit Code, see the factory in person or by live video, and confirm the bank account is in the company's name. Our 12-point checklist before paying a supplier covers this in detail.
Step 5: Sample, then a small first order
Approve a sample, then place a first order small enough that a problem is survivable. Scale up once quality and delivery are proven.
Next: which sourcing platform to use and how to order samples.
